“Do I Really Need SPF If My Makeup Has It?” (Short answer: Yes!)

At Naked., we keep it real when it comes to skincare. One of the most common questions we hear is:

“If my makeup has SPF, do I still need sunscreen?”

Short answer: yes.

We know your tinted moisturizer says SPF 30 and your setting spray says SPF 15, so it feels like you’re covered. But here’s the truth makeup SPF is a bonus, not your base.

Why Makeup Alone Isn’t Enough

You don’t apply enough. SPF ratings are based on thick, lab tested applications. To hit SPF 30 with foundation, you’d need to use a teaspoon. Most people barely use a pump.

It’s not applied evenly. Blending, dabbing, and spot-correcting leave gaps, especially around the ears, neck, and hairline.

It doesn’t last. SPF breaks down after a few hours. Your makeup won’t magically reapply itself.

What We Recommend For true protection, especially after treatments like IPL, a dedicated sunscreen under your makeup is key. The good news is that sunscreens today feel weightless, invisible, and nothing like the greasy formulas of the past.

A few of our in studio favorites:

Mineral Moisture Defense SPF 50

Featherlight mineral sunscreen that doubles as a primer. No white cast.

Tint + Tone SPF 50

A tinted mineral SPF that evens tone and adds radiance. Perfect solo or under makeup.

Hydrating Sheer Lip Balm SPF 30

SPF for your lips, with hydration and a subtle sheen.

The Bottom Line Makeup with SPF is better than nothing, but it is not enough on its own. If you want to protect your skin, preserve treatment results, and prevent premature aging, sunscreen is nonnegotiable.
